ABSTRACT

317In 1627, Cardinal Richelieu prevented Protestants from emigrating to New France. Those who wanted to settle in the New World left for New England. In fact, more Huguenots (French Protestants) settled in New England than Catholics in New France. Who knows? The fate of North America might have been different if settlers had been allowed to choose their destination. Be that as it may, whatever their religious origin, wine- loving French emigrants landed in a continent which was rather ignorant about wine.
