11.1 INTRODUCTION

India is a “tropical” country, straddling the Tropic of Cancer in the northern hemisphere (23.4728 N) and has a typical warm and humid climate. Being a large country, with a total area of 3.3 million square kilometers, India has, in fact, been labeled a sub-continent. The term “Tropical Allergy and Asthma,” which was first coined by the author (Anonymous, 1986; Coca and Cook, 1923), applies to manifestations of allergy and asthma in a tropical country such as India and which is different when compared to allergy and asthma as seen in the colder, western countries.
