ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes the structure of the model, and considers the issues involved in the specification of its constituent parts. It also describes the main empirical and conceptual findings of the research, in the form of results from simulations through the model of various potential developments or policies. The book examines the implications of growth for the distribution of incomes and for the position of the poor. It also considers a variety of possible growth strategies based on alternative leading sectors. The book provides a tentative exploration of the consequences of structural change, in the form of land redistribution as an alternative to income redistribution. It also provides an examination of the consequences of a 50 per cent growth in gross domestic product for the level and distribution of personal incomes.
