ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the different sites and sectors of health and social care older adults must navigate as they age and where social work practitioners most often work. It introduces a continuum model to situate the spaces and contexts in which older people come into contact with health and social care service delivery systems. The chapter explains the linkages between sectors, but also illuminate the discourses shaping their mandates, philosophies, and practice principles, whether explicitly or implicitly and call attention to the relative power or voice that older people have in shaping priorities and claiming ownership over services. It explores the dominant discourses that inform how services are designed and delivered within each sector and the main role of social workers in each sector. The chapter discusses counter-discourses that can support social workers to enhance anti-oppression gerontology within these sectors.
