ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a further three ways in which the symbol of the quintessence can be considered. Firstly, the chapter examines the parallels between the concept of the quintessence and Jung's theories about the collective unconscious and the teleological nature of the self. Secondly, the chapter explores links between the emergence of a fifth perspective, the dynamics of individuation and the symbol of the quintessence. A clinical example is given to illustrate this. Finally, the chapter considers the concept of the quintessence in relation to wholeness and as a symbol of the spirit of matter. Ideas from Buddhist and Japanese philosophy are used to explore this. The chapter ends with a reflection on the psychological meaning of the symbol of the quintessence in terms of representing complexity, multiplicity and the essence of our being.
