ABSTRACT

Psychology and physics have a lot in common. Both examine what makes us and the world tick and both explore what holds us together and connects us, as well as what keeps us apart and separates us. This chapter considers Jung's explorations with Wolfgang Pauli into the relationship between physics and psychology, especially in terms of synchronicity. The chapter goes on to examine the way physicists have explored the nature of matter and creation and the psychological fears and fantasies that this has evoked. Finally, the chapter examines dark matter and dark energy and the emergence of the term quintessence to describe dark energy. The term quintessence will be considered in relation to its scientific usage and its symbolic and psychological significance.
