ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with important background information about the field of digital preservation. It then provides practical advice on how to get started in digital preservation and an overview of typical challenges and potential solutions. The chapter focuses on steps involved in developing a robust, sustainable digital archives management system in a business or business-like environment. Digitised records are subject to the same digital preservation challenges as born-digital records: digitisation is not digital preservation. The chapter covers a wide range of considerations involved in a digital archives project, rather than focusing solely on technical matters. It presents a high-level overview of the current standards, certifications and attainable improvement models that exist for digital preservation systems. Standards attempt to provide a shared systemic overview of good practice that can be adapted and deployed in diverse contexts. The chapter also focuses on three approaches of digital preservation: emulation, migration or hardware preservation.
