ABSTRACT

The portrait of Baroness Amelie von Langenau provided in this chapter, based in large measure on the earlier research of Paul Ernst Hammer, demonstrates how widespread her influence was with regard to the development of nascent Methodism in Austria. From her religious awakening in 1890 to her death in 1902, she exhibited an intense missional vision, strengthened the Methodist movement in both Austria and Germany by her lavish generosity, advocated Methodist unification in the German-speaking countries of Europe, and anticipated the modern ecumenical movement.
