ABSTRACT

Hearing impairment is one of the most significant health burdens for humans, particularly for the elderly. The need to improve the diagnosis and management of hearing loss is the main driver for auditory research. Chapter 13 provides an overview of the different types of hearing impairment, focusing on hearing loss due to damage or dysfunction of the cochlea. The chapter describes the physiological bases of hearing impairment and the relations between the physiological disorders and perception. The chapter also provides an overview of the techniques that can be used to diagnose hearing loss and the options that are available to correct for hearing loss, including hearing aids and cochlear implants.>
