ABSTRACT

The twin focus of this chapter is the physical abuse of children and intimate partner violence (IPV). In both instances the focus is on non-sexual violence: the topic of sexual violence is considered in Chapter 5. The reduction of physical abuse of children, both by hitting and neglect, is considered within the broad remit of child protection. The strategies to reduce IPV are the use of Domestic Violence Protection Orders, refuges, and perpetrator treatment. The effectiveness of attempts to reduce family violence must be considered within the family’s social and financial context.
