ABSTRACT

Many property crime offenders have experienced considerable adversity in their lives (e.g. they have been raised in poverty, experienced physical and emotional neglect, been victims of crime and suffer from substance misuse and mental health problems). This chapter, therefore, adopts the view that preventing property crime requires a multi-agency approach that can deal with the range of issues driving this offending. Trends in property crime over the last decade and the adverse experiences facing some property crime offenders are outlined first, followed by an explanation of how multi-agency approaches can work to reduce property crime. These approaches require early intervention, coordination, and the sharing of knowledge/data amongst multiple agencies, including police, local government, business, education, and health services. Using illustrative case studies, this chapter explains how such an approach can work and the potential benefits of working in this way.
