ABSTRACT
The chapter introduces the core topic of the textbook – property crime – with the aim of developing a standardised working definition. The chapter includes an outline of the wide range of offences that come under the umbrella of property crime and considers how legal definitions vary across countries. Policing definitions and how property crime is measured and recorded are also considered. A brief overview of the history of property crime provides further context before the working definition is presented.
