ABSTRACT

Poor mental health experienced by many mothers following divorce and separation has long been acknowledged, but the mental ill-health of fathers, who typically become non-resident parents, has been largely overlooked. This is despite their problems being more severe and longer lasting. For both parents, the stress of living in poverty, as many do, exacerbates their mental health problems. Reduced spending on welfare benefits and mental health support as part of the current UK government austerity measures jeopardises the future well-being of both parents and, consequently, that of their children.
