ABSTRACT

In 1926, Wassily Kandinsky wrote Point and Line to Plane, an introduction to the visual language of seeing and design. Architecture could be understood as a composition of points, lines and planes. Le Corbusier was an architect who was also interested in the dialogue between painting and architecture. His Maison Dom-ino is a series of three concrete slabs, connected with twelve concrete columns and vertical circulation off to the side. At the heart of being a designer or architect, is being a reflective practitioner, an individual who is always re-evaluating and re-creating the world they perceive and design. In other words, each student designs and constructs their own understanding and that constructed reality grows and develops over the entire life of that individual. Within the lecture, Albers emphasizes ideas of design experiments, economy of design and the distinction between being taught and learning.
