ABSTRACT

To novice designers, the business of balancing a game seems quite mysterious—but really, balancing a game is nothing more than adjusting the elements of the game until they deliver the experience game designers want. Part of what makes game balancing so difficult is that no two games are alike and every game has many different factors that need to be in balance. Game balancing can come in a variety of forms, because every different game has different things that must be brought into balance. Most traditional board games and almost all sports use this method to be sure that no player has an unfair advantage over another. One important thing to balance in every game is the length of the gameplay. If the game is too short, players may not get a chance to develop and execute meaningful strategies.
