ABSTRACT

Tracking Varroa is a difficult task. One simple, but useful, map combined a number of ideas to use an online tool to track Varroa over time and tell the reader a bit about its global spread. Hot spots on the map show, in coordination with a small user-controlled slide bar as a timeline, when Varroa was first found in various locales. To remove the clutter by introducing scrolling across the map was therefore an attractive option. The cascading story map provided that sort of flowing option as it also provided an interactive map experience for the user. Varroa data slides in and out in layers against fixed backdrops. As much information as is desired can be introduced in a manner that reduces clutter. When the researcher has a full range of contemporary computing capability coupled with high-speed internet access, the cascading story map is an attractive choice for assembling maps, archives, and timelines.
