ABSTRACT

Scholars and people from all different backgrounds have developed methods and tools for organizing events in space and time and saved them in contemporary formats that they hope will endure as an archive of materials for generations to draw from. This chapter looks at a somewhat parallel view of timelines with an eye to considering how they might evolve along with maps. A timeline with varying lengths of intervals, often with compressed intervals where there is little information, is one way to make a compact display. Another is to retain the gaps and, instead, nest information. With timelines, it is generally desirable to retain the gaps and not remove them; surely something is happening in the gaps. In the interest of conserving space or compressing information for visual appeal or capture, the gaps are removed.
