ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a framework for thinking comprehensively about training staff on the management of student concerns by identifying some often overlooked aspects of staff responses to disruption on a campus. It provides a brief introduction to the challenges facing staff in these departments and follow with a practical case scenario for discussion and training. The chapter looks at how best to teach the concepts in the book to staff in these miscellaneous departments. Staff working with prospective and admitted students can help the institution be proactive about student behaviors and student success. The student experience does not begin and end when they walk in and out of the classroom. Instead, the chapter highlights the many aspects of the college experience and how even passive interactions with the campus community can result in incidents that should be addressed by a conduct office or campus Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs).
