ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the lived experiences of T. Hesburgh and the seven Jesuit leaders in transforming principles into praxis in their respective academic institutions. This includes the translations of Catholic and Jesuit spirituality and principles into reality. C. Currie maintained that the Ex Corde Ecclesiae has a noble vision for the Catholic identity of Catholic universities but was very limited in scope when it came to the mandate of theologians to be authorized by their respective bishops. Currie has always had a personal commitment to academic values. Currie was extensively engaged with Ex Corde Ecclesiae while he was president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU). He worked closely with Dr. Monika Hellwig, then president of AJCU's sister association, the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU). He conversed with Roman officials and bishops of the United States and explained the issues to members of AJCU.
