The term ‘intimacy’ suggests a strongly perceived need for values and comforts that a family unit, romantic partnership or even friendship is supposed to embody in our daily lives. According to Sternberg (1986), intimacy is one of three components of love, with the other two being passion and commitment/decision. In this chapter, we employ a broader definition of intimacy that encompasses emotional or sexual closeness with another person, as this definition allows for more flexibility in interpreting the relationships formed on gay-tailored social media. In other words, intimacy can be casual, stable (long term) or a combination of both.
