ABSTRACT

Society has acquired a growing interest on genetics, especially after the development of new important biotechnologies based on it and on the deep knowledge of our own genome we have recently gained after completing the Human Genome project. The consequence of this interest is that many people deeply believe in concepts coincident with the genetic determinism postulates. The role of epigenetics should be helping science to change the public perception of genetic determinism thus staying away from its disastrous consequences on the ethics of advanced societies. However, epigenetics should also avoid the danger of simply adding a new “epigenetic determinism” to the initial perception.
