ABSTRACT

Time will be saved by road transport in other directions, since it is more amenable to direct control on the part of the consignor. Road transport can best compete with the railway on journeys of moderate length, say up to 50 miles, though it is impossible to give any exact limits, since the relative sphere of road and rail cannot yet be delineated with any exactitude. Road transport also means the prompt and certain return of empties such as baskets, churns, etc., and these provide return loads for the vehicles. To traders such as large provision dealers and grocers who require transport for a considerable amount of miscellaneous merchandise, some savings may be effected, since they generally pay according to gross weight when their loads are sent by road. The conveyance of perishable goods illustrates in a marked degree the special advantages that appertain to mechanical road transport.
