ABSTRACT

The factors that determine the correct choice of the type of vehicle—petrol, petrol-electric, electric battery, steamer or horse—that will be best suited for any purpose depend entirely on the particular conditions of the case. If frequent stopping and starting is necessitated, the petrol motor becomes expensive, and in this work the "electric" finds a limited but important field where it can show to advantage. The most popular field for the employment of the "petrol-electric" is for passenger transport, but they are also utilized to a limited extent for other purposes. In many fields of horse cartage the true comparison is not between horses and petrol motors, but between horses and electric battery vehicles. It has been suggested that horse vehicles should be debarred from using streets during certain hours of the day, especially in view of the increasing congestion and the general slowing down of traffic in the larger cities.
