The employee on an offshore installation has the full range of legal remedies at his command in the event of an accident occurring in which he is injured in some way. The Fatal Accidents Act is applied to deaths of passengers in aircraft, which might prove important to oil-rig workers whose main method of communication with the shore is by helicopter. In relation to repairs to offshore installations, for example to electrical equipment, this might be of importance, and the owners may frequently need the assistance of marine construction engineers to undertake repairs. Under regulations the Secretary of State may appoint a competent person to conduct an inquiry where a casualty or other accident involving loss of life or danger to life which occurs on or in connection with the presence or operations of an offshore installation in a designated area.
