ABSTRACT

The final chapter of this book ventures to propose a roadmap for the creation and diffusion of endonormative varieties of English in the Expanding Circle, as the ultimate and possibly only way of acquiring true ownership of English for Expanding Circle users of EIL, with Japanese English as an example. While Edgar W. Schneider’s Dynamic Model has often been employed, against the intention of Schneider himself, to discuss the developmental process of Englishes in the Expanding Circle, such an attempt has not been very productive. Schneider’s model is aimed at the analysis of postcolonial Englishes in the Outer and Inner Circle with highly distinct sociolinguistic environments from those of the Expanding Circle. This chapter provides future prospects for Englishes in the Expanding Circle by offering a vision highly different from that of the Dynamic Model, before concluding with a concise summary of the whole volume.
