ABSTRACT

As a paradigm for grasping the whole picture of EIL (English as an International Language) education, this chapter proposes a holistic framework of EIL studies from a pedagogical perspective. This framework is based on the view that EIL research is expected to answer six fundamental questions on EIL: 1. What is EIL? 2. Why is EIL necessary? 3. How is EIL possible? 4. What does EIL look like? 5. How is EIL used? 6. How can EIL be taught? In this proposed paradigm, for example, the theoretical basis of EIL studies is organized into several subsections, in accordance with its historical, anthropological, linguistic, sociolinguistic, and communicative domains. It is hoped that this framework will serve as a guide for researchers and teachers who may be overwhelmed by the abundance of research in global Englishes.
