ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly summarizes the main principles of EIL (English as an International Language) education as basic guidelines for teachers and administrators interested in incorporating the concept of EIL into their educational efforts. Principles for materials, methodologies, models, testing, teachers, and learners in EIL education are presented in contrast with those in the traditional teaching of Anglo-American English. Materials and testing are further divided into receptive, productive, and interactive aspects. This chapter provides a succinct overview of what EIL education should look like, when there has long been a gap between the philosophy of EIL and actual pedagogical practice.
