ABSTRACT

While there has recently been a surge of interest among researchers worldwide in pedagogy for EIL, many tend to focus on “teaching about EIL,” that is, raising learners’ awareness in EIL, rather than providing training in actual EIL skills. This chapter investigates what approaches and methods may be available for teaching EIL. It lists four classroom methods, along with two additional principles. The former consists of “exposure to varieties of English,” “role-plays as cross-cultural training,” “content-based approach to EIL,” and “participation in a community of practice in EIL.” The latter concerns a need for locally-appropriate methodologies as well as the significance of presenting the local teacher’s English as a model.
