ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a method of teaching EIL (English as an International Language), now known as IPTEIL (Integrated Practice in Teaching EIL), which has grown out of the author’s pedagogical practice in teaching university undergraduate EFL classes. In IPTEIL, students watch, read, and discuss real-time news on the Internet that represent the linguistic and cultural diversity of WE (World Englishes), as an authentic task for EIL users. An emphasis is placed on comparing and contrasting various viewpoints reflected in different news media for the purpose of nurturing critical literacy in EIL. Multiple pedagogical concepts are integrated in this method, including the content-based approach, Global Education, media literacy education, and Legitimate Peripheral Participation in a Community of Practice. An award known as the Osaka University Award for Outstanding Contributions to General Education was given to the author’s classroom practice in IPTEIL as many as 14 times.
