ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concept and characteristics of data. It also explores how higher education could produce qualified data science workers, or data scientists. The chapter examines a preliminary job analysis to understand current job markets for data science workers. It shows the idea that data are symbols or raw facts that are stored in electronic media. The chapter defines the data science as an interdisciplinary field that explores scientific methodology and computational technology about data, including data management, access, analysis, and evaluation for the benefits of human beings. It describes the students of a graduate-level information science class at the University of North Texas to collect the data. The chapter examines that a data science worker needs to know how to organize and clean up data, how to analyze data, and how to create data visualizations using different tools. It summarizes the knowledge and skills required for different levels of data science workers.
