ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an account of how existentialism can be used as an important foundation of theoretical understanding. Neil Thompson highlights some of the key concepts of this complex philosophy and gives us a picture of how the ideas can be drawn upon in practice – that is, how it can be used to “theorize” practice. Premised on existentialism’s notion that there are always choices, and choices always have consequences, the chapter explores how helping people to take ownership of their choices can help them manage the difficulties and challenges they face. “Authenticity” is at the heart of the existentialist approach. By recognizing what we have control over and fully exercising that control is the basis of the existentialist approach to empowerment.
