ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to offer a foundation in sociological thought, outlining many of the various concepts and themes that have developed through social research and theoretical analysis. It emphasizes the significance of making use of a sociological perspective as a basis for professional practice in a wide range of occupational settings. The book discusses some of the early thought that established sociology as an academic discipline, while also addressing a number of contemporary issues and debates. It examines the range of organizational factors that affect the workplace across various settings. "Organizational psychology" is a popular and helpful field of study, but this can usefully be supplemented by a sociological analysis of organizational life. The book focuses on examining individuals in their social context.
