ABSTRACT

Bagsee' is effective because it has a clear meaning within the playground community. It is an example of verbal ritual; formulae that have an established meaning and do not need further explanation or supplementary threats. The simplest rituals are single words. Many other games also have the possibility of invoking additional rules which modify or cancel the basic regulations. Although it was usual in the Oxford playgrounds to preface any such request with 'bagsee', this powerful formula does not appear to be necessary in games or marbles. Identifying 'crucems' with safety is one step towards learning how to use it. Although these various ways of playing with words are extremely subtle, they are not confined to adulthood. Children in the playground are equally adept in their use. Distinguishing between real and pretend was more of a problem for some teachers and the dinner-ladies.
