ABSTRACT

The design of the Malta Stock Exchange incorporated the ambition to architecturally integrate a hybrid cooling strategy. In converting the former garrison church of Valletta into the Malta Stock Exchange, the architects Architecture Project wanted to ensure that the mechanics of cooling would not undermine the architectural qualities of the interior. The site of the Stock Exchange is very exposed, perched on the south-western edge of the bastions of Valletta, overlooking the Grand Harbour 30 metres below. The Stock Exchange in the city of Valletta, Malta is an office building created by the conversion and retrofit of a 19th century garrison church on the walls of the fortified military town. The building’s conversion was completed in 2003 and it was designed by architects Architecture Project in collaboration with Environmental Design Consultants, Brian Ford and Associates, London, and MEP Engineers Mediterranean Technical Services.
