ABSTRACT

The high level of occupant satisfaction with the environment in the CMS highlights the quality of the architecture and the high level of collaboration within the design team to achieve an integrated approach to environmental design. The process of understanding the site, its physical, social, economic, cultural and environmental context, and the implications of the aspirations of the client, involves a process of analysis and evaluation which may be described as research, with the intention of ‘clarifying the choices available’. The context of existing buildings within urban environments is constantly changing, but opportunities may exist even where the constraints may initially appear overwhelming. The renovation of the former Post Office complex in the Via Bergognone in Milan by Mario Cucinella Architect faced the additional environmental problem of noise and pollution from a busy traffic intersection. Environmental control in the cellular offices was provided by single sided and buoyancy ventilation with provision for chilled beams should the need arise.
