ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a range of different types of tool which can help designers to evaluate the performance of different options from outline to full scheme design. A horizontal shade designed to cut out the sun at noon on the equinox will prevent any direct radiation entering the façade throughout the six summer months. The most widely used engineer-oriented natural ventilation design guide is the UK CIBSE Applications Manual ‘Natural Ventilation in Non-Domestic Buildings. The application of dynamic simulations in the design process is exemplified in the Kuwait School project by Mario Cucinella Architects. The school, a three storey building with central courtyard originally designed as the first low carbon school building in Palestine, was located in the Khan Younis refugee camp and hosted 32 classrooms distributed on three floors for a total capacity of 2050 children.
