ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader into the research, both from a theoretical point of view and from an ethnographic perspective. Some of the main concepts that will be discussed are presented, as well as the research methodology, the settings where the ethnography took place, and the main debates regarding anthropology of kinship, anthropology of psychiatry, and gender studies in the Andes that are relevant to the study of incestuous violence against rural women in Andean societies. This chapter will focus on critically discussing theories of incest and existing literature on the subject.
