ABSTRACT

Stepping down from secure services, most women at the unit described in this chapter have severe and enduring mental health difficulties, predominantly BPD and paranoid schizophrenia. There are also clients with bipolar disorder and schizo-affective disorder, as well as those with co-morbid disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anorexia nervosa and drug and/or alcohol dependency. Freedom, choice and acceptance are themes that often arise and the dramatherapy group provides them with a space in which to safely voice their frustrations and celebrate their individuality. Their cry for freedom resonates at different levels. A selection of session vignettes and interventions are shared, together with creative pieces, to illustrate the vitality of the work generated. The NICE guidelines for schizophrenia (2014a) are also noted and the issue of stigma and mental health is explored in relation to performance born in the therapy space. Finally, three colleagues from different professions share their thoughts about dramatherapy.
