ABSTRACT

SUSHI WITH SHANE HURLBUT, ASC* Shane Hurlbut, ASC, is a tour de force. We sit at a sushi bar in Malibu Beach as the darkening spring sky brings out twinkling stars. It’s been a long week shooting a short fiction written and directed by collaborator Po Chan, with fifteen-hour shoots the norm, a demanding task for a low budget film for Canon in a bid to show off the 5D Mark II’s capability as a cinema camera. Exhaustion ebbs around Hurlbut’s eyes, but his effulgent passion for cinematic storytelling, his jovial flare of expression, isn’t tempered by fatigue. He insists that I try yellowtail touched by cilantro and fire sauce-which sums up his enthusiasm for life. “It’s killer,” he remarks with a laugh. He knows when to party and is quick to laugh on set, but sometimes impatient with those not firing as fast as he is.
