ABSTRACT

Due to the nature of spirituality and religion, there are specific issues and interventions unique to the counseling process. In this chapter, the authors define and explore concepts such as spiritual bypass, forgiveness, and shame. Further, resources for intervention in the spiritual domain are described such as meditative prayer, sacred materials, mandalas and other methods. The authors explore the ethical appropriateness and timing for each and offer examples of interventions, as well as a case example.
