ABSTRACT

Social development offers a singular framework to address the multiple and interrelated needs of not only individuals and groups, but also whole populations within geographies in which poverty is prevalent. It intertwines social institutions, policies and programmes to improve human well-being in nations undergoing development. Social development serves as a multidimensional, multilevel and value-based approach useful in addressing and resolving complex social issues with the overall goal of promoting social welfare, social development has an inter- and trans-disciplinary focus. Locality-based social development is a neighbourhood-based community improvement strategy used to engage a broad range of key stakeholders in planning change, taking action and evaluating outcomes. Local capacity building is important in addressing poverty, inequalities, social exclusion and poor governance, thereby improving development outcomes in marginal communities. Leadership is pivotal in forming and sustaining the social development organization. Two types are salient: transactional leadership and transformational leadership.
