ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains the geometry of the simplest folds, and then shows how complicated folds can be broken down into interrelated single folds. It describes the geometry of all the types of folds one will encounter when drawing the figure, and show where they occur. There are many possible poses and actions of the figure. By learning the types of folds and how the positions of the limbs create forces of tension and compression that push and pull on clothing, one will be able to predict which folds apply at every joint in any pose they imagine. The approach to drawing that has helped me as a storyboard artist is based on understanding and memorizing the three-dimensional structure of things, especially the human figure.
