ABSTRACT

Any ideal leader is concerned with two main issues: people and results, which is reflected in the writings of Peter Drucker. He believed that management is concerned with getting things done through people. Effective leaders inspire extraordinary performance from their people by so touching their hearts and minds that they are prepared to go the extra mile for customers. Inspirational leadership comes from the heart and therefore it is an ethical issue. The essence of great leadership is the ability to obtain the best from people by adapting to changing circumstances. This is reflected in Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard's situational leadership which states that a leader's style is heavily influenced by his situation, particularly the behaviour of the leader in relation to followers. Compassion and empathy follow directly from a duty of service. Great leaders must put themselves in the shoes of their followers and think about how a decision might affect them.
