ABSTRACT

This is an analysis of the part II of On Multiple Realities, where Schutz introduced his general model of the multiple realities, that is, the very core of the problem investigated in this book. The chapter continues with a study of the ‘empirical’ excursions included in Schutz’s On Multiple Realities, namely his analyses of the worlds of fiction, dream, and ‘scientific contemplation’, which are essential for an understanding of the Schutzian contribution to the epistemology of the social sciences. This chapter also discusses several other papers and ideas by Schutz connected to this problem, such as the problem of symbols, polyphony, or the question of fiction vs reality found in his analysis of Cervantes’s novel ‘Don Quixote’.
