ABSTRACT

The mean levels of involvement of pupils in top streams, measured in terms of favourable attitudes to school and voluntary participation in school activities, were higher than those of pupils in lower streams. There is quite an extensive literature of studies of pupils’ attitudes and dispositions towards school. A particular example is the organisation of the school uniform. Case studies of grammar schools, a modern school, and a comprehensive school had shown associations between stream status and pupil involvement in school. Case studies can be very valuable in opening up new areas of inquiry, in generating new theoretical ideas, or in testing new methodologies. Case studies of grammar schools, a modern school, and a comprehensive school had shown associations between stream status and pupil involvement in school. Educational success, in terms of passing the eleven-plus, gaining certificates, staying on in the sixth form, and entering university, was shown to be more commonly associated with middle-class rather than working-class pupils.
