ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different important sets of authority relationships. The organisation and presentation of the headteacher confirms his or her position as the holder of most formal authority. In most cases the passing of the headteacher’s authority to the prefects was symbolised by their shaking hands, and by the presentation of the symbols of office. The professional authority of teachers limits the pupils having much direct power over the detailed curriculum and pedagogy. Many mixed schools have strong taboos on the public demonstration of even the mildest non-professional relationship between teachers of different sexes. Teachers themselves often feel vulnerable about these things, and there are authentic cases of couples being secretly engaged without anyone, either staff or pupils, suspecting even a friendship. Keeping the staffroom door firmly closed to pupils avoids their accidental witnessing of the banter that characterises the informal relationships between teachers, as men and women.
