ABSTRACT

Chalmers and Tucker outline a case study on the development of a national strategy for teaching excellence and its implementation in over two thirds of Australian universities. The Australian teaching excellence framework was established to support institutions’ development rather than ‘measure’ performance per se. The framework and processes, with their clearly defined standards for teaching excellence, have assisted institutions to review their policies for appointment, performance review and promotion and the provision of support, such as professional development for academics to achieve their desired criteria and standards. While the need for teaching excellence to be defined according to the values and context of the institution is recognized, establishing a framework and associated processes has avoided an ad hoc approach to the recognition and reward of teaching excellence across the sector in Australia, as well as Canada, Iceland, Sweden, South Africa and Malaysia, where the framework has been subsequently adopted.
