ABSTRACT

After 20 years of teaching, the last 11 at the same school, Ginny was feeling some burnout. Teaching the same subject class after class, day after day was wearing on her. She guided her students as they worked on individual goals. Setting goals, conferencing with the teacher and other students, completing reading logs, going public with writing pieces. Class time was divided into reading days and writing days. Once a week they were required to correspond through a letter in a literature log about their reading. The student evaluations at the end of the year verified that she had made the right decision. Students who admitted they had never finished a book were excited to discover that reading is fun. Veteran teacher Schyrlet Cameron recently received the 1997 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. She likes projects and enjoys writing grants, not only because they benefit her students but also because it keeps teaching interesting for her.
