ABSTRACT

Films are closely related to other forms of literature. As a form of popular media, films are especially useful as a reflection of contemporary society, including youth culture. This chapter explores the role of film in the literature classroom, and examines the important characteristics of film as an art form. First, the chapter explains concepts that students need to understand to analyze and discuss films. It identifies specific ways to compare films with print literature to understand elements and themes that are common to all literary forms. Understanding basic film terms helps viewers to analyze and discuss films. The chapter also explores how the film business influences filmmaking and viewing. Finally, it explores films from a critical literacy perspective that acknowledges both the cultural impact of films and the social and economic forces that influence filmmaking.
