ABSTRACT

This chapter explores stories set in imaginary worlds or peopled with imaginary beings. It identifies some of the many types of fantasy literature that have emerged since the publication of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and discusses how fantasy stories can be used in the classroom. The chapter also examines how science fiction, also known as speculative fiction, can help young adults engage with the real world by raising questions about the consequences of human actions. The chapter explores diversity in both fantasy and speculative fiction from a critical literacy perspective. It highlights diversity issues in fantasy and science fiction literature and suggests ways to use it in the classroom. Examining imaginary worlds is one way to think about the rich and diverse genre of fantasy literature available to young adults.
